When was the last time you slept better in a hotel than in the comfort of your own home? Animals are even less adaptable than humans to a change in their routine. Most pets adjust better to their owner’s absence and experience less anxiety when they can remain in their home under the care of a loving professional, without the stress of a new environment, other pets, exposure to diseases and travel trauma that pets often experience when being boarded. Veterinarians will tell you that they often have to administer medicine for diarrhea to pets who become stressed while being boarded, and that they often don't eat or sleep well and suffer more severe separation anxiety than if they were at home. Pet sitting allows your pets to stay in their own familiar environment, follow their normal routine, sleep in their own bed where they feel safe and comfortable and follow a schedule according to your personalized instructions. Here are photos of some of our regular clients pets relaxing at home.
Pet sitting also plays an important role in home security while you're away; homes that look lived-in are far less likely to be burglarized. We safeguard your home and its contents by locking doors and windows, setting security alarms, putting out the trash, collecting mail, newspaper and packages, rotating lights and blinds and watering plants.
WHY HIRE A PROFESSIONAL PET SITTER WHEN MY NEIGHBOR CAN DO IT?
Many people are tired of relying on friends or neighbors to care for their pets; all too often, clients' pets and homes have suffered while in the care of well-meaning house sitters...cats escape, dogs get sick or injured, owners return home from vacation to find empty water bowls, dirty litterboxes and accidents in the house. Truckee Tails is a professional pet sitting service. We're bonded and insured and a member of Pet Sitters International. We're certified in pet First Aid/CPR. We're responsible and reliable. We have access to many resources including emergency veterinary care. Most of all, we love animals and give them lots of love, attention and exercise.
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS SHOULD A PROFESSIONAL PET SITTER HAVE?
At a minimum, anyone coming into your home to care for your pets and safeguard your property should be bonded and insured. In addition, it is a good idea to hire a pet sitter who lives in the neighborhood they serve, so that your pets aren't kept waiting (or visits missed!) during snowstorms. You should also make sure that the owner of the pet sitting service, or another independent pet sitter, will actually be doing the visits with your pets, rather than just a temporary or seasonal worker. Finally, you should make sure your pet sitter has been in business for a reasonable amount of time and has a large enough client base to show that they are viable and won't disappear between the time you book and leave for your vacation.
HOW PET SITTING WORKS
Morning visits start at 6:45 a.m.; we feed your pets, change their water and give them any medication required, then we take your dog(s) out for a walk either around the streets or out on a local trail. We also clean the litterbox, brush your cats and play with them, clean any pet messes in the house, water the plants, collect mail & packages, put out the trash, check the doors and windows, open blinds, turn off lights and leave a t.v. or radio on for your pets, if desired. We return to the house at dinnertime, feed your pets and administer any medication, walk your dogs, play with your cats, close the blinds, turn on lights and perform any other household tasks. While two visits per day are the minimum for dogs, many clients have us do a mid-day potty break between 11 and 2:00, or an early dinner visit and then a late night potty break. (During our get-acquainted interview we will custom tailor a schedule to your pets' needs.) Visits for dogs are never more than 12 hours apart. Cat visits are minimum once a day and your cat must be kept safely locked inside the house while you are gone. (Please Note: We do not spend the night in clients' homes, nor do we board clients' pets in our home)
RATES & SERVICE AREAS
Starting at $20 per visit* and includes up to 2 dogs or 3 cats; extra dogs are $5/visit and extra cats are $2. Service area is strictly limited in order to provide timely and reliable service to your pet(s). *depending on location and frequency of visits.
